Yet another nit-picking Microsoft Word detail. Part of this nit-picking stems from a bit of previous instruction which worked, but not without me going through the simple steps several times. I’m a hot-key kind of guy, and this exercise required several hot-key presses, 4 to be exact. The problem I had was that I was pressing F10 and the N and U instead of F10, N, N, and U. Now this could be my fault for not reading correctly except that the first N is divided from the second N and U by an image within the text, making them appear to be separate instructions.
Now if I follow the same train of thought, that one instruction follows another, and I press F10 when the Page Number drop down is active, F10 does not show the next set of keys. It’s a small detail, but if you’re going to instruct someone to follow a set of tasks you need a clear start and finish to each set of tasks. Don’t make the person guess when one set starts and one doesn’t. The publisher might argue that the steps were in a bullet-ted list on another page, which is a valid argument, but they posted a screenshot of the previous step (the F10,N,NU) right above the exercise (which to most people means it belongs to that page/text).
One of the details I’ve mentioned to people learning Office is that the book is often very precise. Unfortunately, it’s not perfect and this is a good example of how easily someone could be confused by a misplaced image or areas that are not defined well enough.
