Ubuntu Linux version 9.10, aka Karmic Koala, has been out for a little over half a month now. Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols who writing for Computer World called the release candidate "a very strong Linux desktop."[1]. We've installed it on a few machines with varying results. On some machines the assertion that it's very fast held true, on other machines (in particular certain machines with particular Intel video chipsets) we found it very sluggish. We're putting together a complete review of Karmic based on our experiences on 3 different machines. Expect to see the review shortly.

I've tried the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD and noticed that the clock displays UTC time, rather than local time. That is easy enough to change by choosing the correct timezone in System > Administration > Time and Date, but when you reboot from the live CD you notice that it has changed the system time so that your installed OS does not display the correct local time. This can be prevented by setting the correct time zone and editing /etc/default/rcS and changing "UTC=yes" to "UTC=no" before you reboot.
