Asunder is a Linux application for ripping music cds. What makes Asunder noteworthy is the variety of formats it can rip to. The Asunder user interface is dead simple, click Extract and it rips the cd. If connected to the Internet Asunder automatically does a CDDB lookup for song information. If the lookup fails or the system isn’t connected to the Internet there’s a CDDB button to resubmit the CDDB request. I tried Asunder with the lossless flac codec on my Linux workstation at work and it flew through a CD in less than 30 seconds (7 songs, Dual P4 3GHz with 4GB RAM).

Changing configuration options is simple just click the Preferences button. Ogg is the default codec. For additional codecs click the More Formats arrow or the Proprietary encoders arrow. Wav, mp3, ogg, and flac are visible by default in the preferences menu.
Careful observers will notice my screenshot of Asunder is in Spanish. Asunder defaults whatever language you’ve chosen for Ubuntu/Linux. In this case I switched my language settings to Spanish.
One pet peeve I have is mp3s named with the track number first. Asunder does just this. Change the behaviour in the Preferences > Filenames tab.
Asunder is simple, fast, can dump music to several formats, and is effective. I’ve set Asunder as the default application to open music cds with (when the cd dialog pops up use a custom command of asunder).
