This morning I needed to compress a mpeg video I generated using Openshot. My first thought was converting it, since I planned on posting it to the web, so I went through the software descriptions in Ubuntu Software Centre and found WinFF. WinFF is a very easy to use graphical front end to ffmpeg. It converts to a limited number of formats (including Blackberry, DVD, iRiver, Bravia, Rockbox, and mobile phones) compared to other conversion tools, but the presets making choosing the right format easy. For example, you can select DVD and choose from presets for NTSC DVD HQ Widescreen format, and PAL DVD Fast (Low Quality). There’s a good selection of formats and conversion seems to be fast. If you don’t want to putz around with tweaking everything WinFF seems like a good video conversion solution.
